Free Burito (Boo-Rito) from Chipolte

Even though I absolutely love Chipolte (natural & fresh ingredients! hormone free chicken! the best black bean burritos!), here is why I am not participating in this event...

... you need to dress as a burrito (or other favorite food item) in order to receive it. That is enough said in my book.

Good tonight from 6-10. No coupon necessary. Here's the story...I guess Chipolte has been at this awhile so I am sure you won't be the only one. :-)

Free Bath and Body Works Lotion

Possible stocking stuffer? Even though its nearing 70 degrees here in Des Moines AND its the last day of October, Christmas shopping is beginning to enter my mind. Its hard not to think about it as I was shopping at Target today and saw Fall items being clearance and red and green decor moving its way in. Bring it on! I love the holidays! By the way...click here for the lotion coupon.

Candy Infused?

Last night was Beggar's Night in West Des Moines. It was an ideal weather night and the trick or treaters were out in full force. Wondering what to do with all of the excess candy? I have zero willpower around sweets and if I know they are there, its a lost cause for me. Here is my candy plan this year:

* Freeze Candy: This works especially well for Snickers bars. There is nothing like a chilled snickers in the summer time. Of course, the problem is...having them last until then (they never do at our house, but it does slow down the consumption a bit).

* The Candy Fairy made an appearance at our house last night. I let them choose if they wanted to participate or not as I never did it when I was growing up. The girls were on board immediately and picked out ten favorite pieces to keep (I even let them keep it in their rooms which is unheard of at our house, but thought it would help with ownership :-). They left the remaining candy on the front step with our porch lights on to let the Candy Fairy that we meant business. The Candy Fairy took all the candy to his office today and left a present that all three kids can enjoy.

* EP True Dental in West Des Moines will pay you a $1 for each pound of candy taken in. They in turn are shipping the candy overseas for the soldiers. What a great idea! This is especially great for those older kids that I saw with overflowing pillow cases last night trick or treating...Thanks, Joe, for this idea.

Any other candy ridding ideas out there besides gorging on all of it...at least its out of sight out of mind then...:-)

I Vote for Free Ice Cream!

In less then five days this election wil thankfully be behind us. On November 4th, celebrate making your voice count with Ben & Jerry's free scoop of ice cream! Offer is good from 5-8 pm on Election Day.

Crock Pots are Cool!

Its getting to be that time of year! Crock pot season! Gone are the days of only-a-grandma-uses- one stereotype. Crockpots are cool! We have our usual favorites we always cook (roasts and chili are by far the most common). I have made a little early resolution that I will use mine more and try a variety of recipes. I mentioned I have the Fix it and Forget it Lightly cookbook which I love, but the truth is...I am online far more then I am rummaging around in my cookbook cupboard.

Finding a recipe online is so easy and convenient! Did you know that there is someone who has vowed to use her crockpot every single day of the year? She includes recipes, pictures of the finished product, and readers can comment and add their variations. What a fun idea. Check it out here. Please let me know if you have a crockpot favorite. I love the convenience of piling everything in the cooker on my own timetable and having dinner ready to go whenever we are!

Halloween Candy Recall

Is nothing safe anymore?! I heard about this from several people, but with trick or treating a few days away, it is definitely worth posting. I heard about this from several sources, but the bottom line is that the candy (shown below) is responsible for hospitalizing thousands of babies in China. It has been traced back to the candy manufacturers. I have never heard of the White Rabbit candy, but my girls love the gold chocolate coins.

The image “http://www.imommies.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/sherwoodwhiterabbit.bmp” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.
I am actually kind of dreading the candy overload that will be soon invading our house anyway. I have heard of having a Candy Fairy come the night of Trick or Treat and leaving a gift in place of the candy. I am thinking of letting the kids choose ten or so favorite pieces, they leaving the rest at the door for fairy. It is kind of selfish on my part too...I have no willpower around candy and will really need to have it out of the house...

Websites that will Save you money!

You know how you are reading a magazine and you hear about a great new website and you think, “I really have to remember that!” Then moments later, as you put the magazine away, that website thought goes away and it is forgotten forever.

This isn’t going to happen this time! Sara Says has compiled a list of good websites that are guaranteed to save you money—if you remember to look at them! All you have to do is click on the site and bookmark it right away. Great! One less thing to remember!

Gasbuddy.com and gaspricewatch.com: will find the cheapest gas stations in the area. All you have to do is put in your destination and you can find the best places for filling up.

Retailmenot.com: This site keeps coupon codes for discounts at 15,000 online stores. When you are getting ready to do your Christmas shopping, enter the web address and you will get a code to receive the price break.

Thegrocerygame.com: I have not tried this yet, but has a friend that swears by it and says it has saved her hundreds of dollars a month in groceries. It provides a weekly list of the lowest-priced products at your favorite grocery stores with coupons and specials.

Honesty.com: Have you ever been in the situation on ebay where you want an item and the price keeps going up? You get caught up in the auction, end up winning the item and then wonder if you paid too much? Its happened to me! This site allows you to type in an item name and it will give you price comparisons on current and recent ebay listings.

Free T-Shirts at Old Navy! Trick or Treat with Kids!

When I first heard of this, I thought that it seemed like fun, but not worth the effort. As I am sure they are with you, Saturdays have been very busy at our household. With two kids in soccer, we are running between games (and actually kind of happy and relieved when they overlap...less time at the soccer field)!

But as I read a little closer with this post here from A Mom in Red High Heels, I realized this seemed like a pretty good event to hit. On Saturday October 25th and Sunday October 26th, Old Navy is hosting a Halloween party at every store. In addition to giving away candy they will be giving FREE t-shirts (a certificate up to $14.50 value for any graphic tee) and are having tons of discounts. Could be worth checking out if you are out and about and also a good chance to find out if the costumes are in good working order for next week...!

Free Taco at Taco Bell on Tuesday, Oct. 28th

Am I the only person not to have heard of this base stealing thing? Even my husband was telling me about it! Evidently when a base is stolen in the World Series everyone gets a free taco. Click here for details. Sounds good to me. Let's hear it for base stealing!

A New Site to Bookmark!

I want to introduce you to a site called Buzzilions.com. Have you heard of it? It is a site put together by people like us for people like us. In other words, its a product review site, but the nifty thing is that the people who write the reviews aren't paid advertisers. They have no vested interest except to rant or rave about a toy or product they have purchased.

With the holiday season just around the corner (I know, I know, it is way early but don't act like you haven't seen the Christmas trees and decorations up at the stores already) this site will help you make informed decisions and avoid buyer's remorse. Happy reviewing and shopping!

Organic Eating

I love the idea (and I think most of us would agree) of being able to purchase chemical free food for our families. The truth is that organic food is expensive. There is a "dirty dozen" list of foods that includes the twelve best foods to buy organically if you can. These are the foods that are most likely to absorb all of the pesticides, chemicals and added hormones.

Here is a recap of the must-buy organic foods:
  • Apples
  • Cherries
  • Grapes, imported (Chili)
  • Nectarines
  • Peaches
  • Pears
  • Raspberries
  • Strawberries
  • Bell peppers
  • Celery
  • Potatoes
  • Spinach
  • Milk
  • Beef
  • Poultry
Do I buy every single one of these organically every time? No, of course not. I would like to, but I have to be practical in feeding a family of five. I have found little ways around it and do what I can. I try to buy fresh vegetables and fruits in season. Right now (in the Fall) we eat a lot of apples and have had fun visiting apple orchards as a family. We also love buying locally and visiting farmers markets. I always thoroughly wash all of the fruits and vegetables. Cold water will do the trick. No need for fancy soaps. I recently found this organic coupon site and plan on looking more into it.
I believe that organic food will go down in price as more people become of aware of the effect all of the excess chemicals have on our environment and our bodies. I believe there is a reason that there is so much more sickness, allergies, and cancers in the world...but that is a whole other topic.

Free Breakfast at Starbucks

I've never tried Starbucks food, but am already contemplating if there is a Starbucks on the way to dropping the kids off at school. Ahhh...I probably won't make it, but let me know if you do! Offer valid 7-9 am on Wednesday, October 22.

Homemade Pumpkin Spice Lattes

You all know how much I love my homemade frappucinos.
I came across recipe the other night that has homemade pumpkin spice lattes in the crock pot! I absolutely love pumpkin this time of year (especially Libby's 100% pure pumpkin) What a fun idea! I am wondering if it will work over stove top. I will let you know! Here it is from a year of crockpotting:

Skip the coffee house today and make pumpkin spice lattes at home.

The Ingredients.
adapted from Taste of Home's Halloween 2008 edition

--2 cups milk (I used 1%)
--2 T canned pumpkin
--2 T white sugar
--2 T vanilla (not a typo. it asks for tablespoons)
--1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice
OR: 1/4 tsp cinnamon, 1/8 tsp cloves, 1/8 tsp nutmeg, and a teeny tiny pinch of ground ginger
--1/2 cup brewed espresso or 3/4 cup strong brewed coffee

--garnish with whipped cream (optional)

The Directions.

This will make enough for 2 people to have a big mug with a bit leftover. If you are having friends over, adjust the recipe accordingly. I used a 4-quart crockpot, but as small as a 1.5 quart will work with these amounts.

Add the coffee/espresso and milk to the crockpot. Whisk in the spices, sugar, and vanilla.

Cover and cook on high for 2 hours if everything is cold. Whisk again.

Ladle into mugs, and garnish with whipped cream and additional cinnamon. I added a cinnamon stick to be fancy.

How to Shop at Walgreens

I ran the Des Moines Half Marathon this morning...a pretty fast one at that. It was a beautiful morning to run and was a good race. After feasting on waffles, I couldn't wait to get home and check out the Sunday paper...specifically the Walgreens Ad. Am I out of my mind?

Shopping at Walgreens has become a game and almost mini obsession with me. There is untapped potential there for wonderful deals. Up until the last few months, Walgreens has always been a place to refill my prescriptions and now it is the place to go to pick up free and almost free items. It really is kind of like a game and something I didn't really get until my friend Wendy introduced it to me. I admit, it does help that a Walgreens is one mile from our house which is almost too conveinent, but this is something that is worth looking into...

It was kind of confusing at first and I am still not a pro like others out there, but I just get what I need or plan on donating and feel good about saving some money.

Here is a good site I found with a great Walgreens 101 tutorial. Here it is...thanks to MoneySavingMom.

Walgreens 101

Besides just the normal store sale, Walgreens has three different types of deals to take advantage of:

1) Rebate Booklet - This is most commonly known to most deal shoppers: The Walgreens EasySaver catalog. These are usually located next to the weekly store flier displays at your local store. You'll want to make sure and grab one on your next shopping trip. Actually, grab three or four while you're at it (I'll tell you why in a minute).

The monthly EasySaver catalog usually includes a few free after rebate items for the month and also a number of other rebates they are offering for the month. Some of the items listed in the booklet which are not free after rebate at their normal price will usually go on sale one week during the month and will then be free after rebate at the sale price.

In order to take advantage of the rebate deals, you'll need to go to the store and buy the items listed, paying out of pocket. Then, you'll fill out the simple rebate form and send it in along with your receipt with the price you paid circled.

You can choose to have the rebate sent back to you in the form of a check or a gift card. Unless you are not planning on shopping at Walgreens more than one time, you should always choose to have your rebate put on a gift card. Why? Well, for one, you get 10% extra for choosing a gift card so this will usually cover the cost of the stamp to send in the rebate, plus any tax you paid on the items.

Best of all, once you've sent in your first rebate request and gotten your gift card with the rebate plus 10% on it back, you will never need to spend a penny more out of pocket at the store! You can just use your gift card to buy the rebate items, send in your rebate form and they'll recharge your gift card with the rebate amount plus 10% and you can roll it over and over month after month.

It usually takes around 4-6 weeks for your first rebate to be processed and for you to receive your gift card. Once you have the gift card and just need them to recharge it, it normally takes 2-3 weeks. They'll send you a postcard saying your rebate $$ have been added to your gift card. You can also always log in to their website at any time to check on the status of your rebate.

In order to take advantage of the other great deals at Walgreens, you want to try - as much as possible - to "grow" your dollar amount on your gift card. How do you do that? The best way is to use a manufacturer's coupon on the free after rebate items. Using coupons, plus the 10% you get back each month, you'll slowly be able to grow your gift card to where you can do the rebates every month, plus take advantage of some of the other Walgreens deals, and never pay a penny out of pocket except for the initial money you paid the first time you bought the rebate items.

The EasySaver catalog also includes a number of store coupons which are good all month (see next point). You can see the October Easy Saver catalog here.

2) Coupon Stacking - The EasySaver catalog and the weekly store fliers always include a number of store coupons which are good all month or all week, depending upon which flier they came from.

Since these are store coupons, they can be stacked with manufacturer's coupons. Often, you'll be able to get a really great deal by stacking a store coupon, a manufacturer's coupon, and a store sale.

This is the reason I told you to grab more than one of the EasySaver booklets. You'll want to have extras of these when you plan your shopping trips. That way, you can plan out your transactions and put all of the coupons you'll need for each in an envelope along with your shopping list.

3) Register Rewards - The Register Rewards program is a brand-new program that Walgreens has recently started. Similar to the CVS Extra Care Bucks Program, when you buy a certain item, you will get a printed coupon after you checkout called "Register Rewards" which you can use like cash on your next purchase. They usually only have a few of these items per week, and many times it is not completely free. However, by adding on a store coupon and/or a manufacturer's coupon, you are often able to get the item for free or almost free after the Register Rewards.

Unlike CVS, the Register Rewards (RR) are not tied to a store card. Instead, they just print out for everyone who buys that particular item or items that week. Because of this, there is no limit on how many of one deal you can do. That said, they have recently tightened their system so that you usually cannot roll the same RR over and over again on the same deal.

For instance, a few weeks back, they were running a Proctor and Gamble Buy $25, Get $10 in RR promotion and they were also running a Unilever Buy $20, Get $10. With store coupons, manufacturer's coupons, and the Register Rewards, I was getting most of these items for almost free (and paying with the out-of-pocket from my gift card, of course!). However, I couldn't do the P&G deal over and over using the $10 RR to pay for my transaction after coupons, since the computer is programmed to not print out another $10 RR on P&G products if I paid for with the $10 RR I got from purchasing them last time. Make sense?

So, you can either just do the deals once, or you can do the deals multiple times and pay out of pocket and then save the RR's you collect each time and use them on groceries or other items later. Or, your best option is to do what I did: Do multiple transactions and alternate between the P&G deal and the Unilever deal. This way, you can keep rolling the RR's over and over and paying very little out of pocket (well, out of your gift card!).

$10 Membership at Sam's Club

Although I am a self-proclaimed Costco Queen, this is too good of deal not to pass on. For 10 weeks, Sam's Club is offering a $10 membership. Click here to read more. I know a lot of people that are beginning to do a majority of their grocery shopping at these buy-in-bulk warehouses. For ten bucks you can easily recoup that cost in savings on milk, gas, cookies, (their cookies are soooo good!) or Christmas presents...

Scrubbing Bubbles Rant

I am still in the experimenting stage of trying to find that balance between finding homemade cleaners that work (and are without all the harmful chemicals) and the convenience of store bought ones.

Last week, I got a ton of Scrubbing Bubbles cleaning things for free at Walgreens. I am getting really good at finding the deals, but more on that later...

Why not give these new cleaning prouducts a try? I used the new Scrubbing Bubbles Fresh Brush Max for toilet bowls over the weekend and hated it. It left blue residue all over the lid, the smell gave me a headache, and it is only good for one use! How environmentally friendly is that?

I was disappointed, but it was a good lesson in that free isn't always good. I am still searching...

Its Almost TIme...

for the Des Moines IMT Marathon and Half Marathon on October 19th. As I write this, the Chicago Marathon is finishing up right now. I have a couple of friends that ran that and all I could think of this morning was that I was glad it wasn't me. ;-) It was muggy and warm this morning as I went for a 10 mile run and I was so happy I wasn't doing 16 more miles! Running a marathon is a lot of wear and tear on your body and the constant repetition can't be good.

As I was listening to my friend's aches and pains in the weeks leading up to the Chicago Marathon, it reaffirmed my thoughts of not being in any hurry to try another one. It is a wonderful accomplishment and I am glad to have that experience at Grandma's Marathon, but the Des Moines Half will be enough for me this time around.

It should be a good race. After good results in Capital Pursuit and staying injury free, I am ready to hang up my racing running shoes for awhile after this one. Its good to give your body a break and am anxious to return to my fun aerobics classes.

Well...I guess there is the Living History Farms off Roads Race in November, but that one is just really fun!

The Pumpkins Are Complete!

I don't know how many pumpkin patches there are in Iowa, but you can add one more to that list! The Weis Family pumpkin patch that started from one little seed produced nine good sized healthy (and orange!) pumpkins! We did have our doubts that anything could ever be produced in our garden...I guess the lesson is to just let things go naturally. ;-) We didn't do a thing with this mess of pumpkin vines and weren't even sure what it was at first!

Megan and Lucy happily traipsed pumpkins over to our neighbors as a peace offering (the vine had become a bit unruly and spread). They wanted to share them with everyone and I was very pleased with their generosity! We did keep a couple pumpkins and proudly displayed them on our front steps...before they soon become jack o lanterns!

Read Aloud to your Kids!

One of the most important things you can do with your children is to read aloud to them. Reading aloud helps children learn the flow and rhythm of the English language. Strong vocabulary is built as children are exposed to new and different words. With chapter books, it allows your child to think creatively as they imagine the scenes and characters from the story. I love reading aloud to my three children and it is something we all look forward to before their bedtime.

We have a zillion picture books at our house from my teaching kindergarten days and the fact that I would rather buy books than toys. I decided it was time to step it up a bit from our picture books and we headed to the library to find a series to begin. There were so many wonderful choices, but here have been our favorites so far.

Costco Queen

I love Costco! With food prices on the rise, it has turned into a weekly food staple trip. Not only are the prices awesome, but its actually fun to shop there! I usually hit it during the lunch hours (11-2) because that is when all the samples are given out. This definitely makes the shopping trip more enjoyable for Max (16 months) and Lucy (4). With those two happily munching on a variety of fare (another bonus is that they are so likely to try new foods when they are in sample size), I can shop for our regular items.

Some of our Costco favorites:

Jack's Original Salsa
Organic Baby Spinach
Tyson's Natural Chicken Nuggets
Kirkland Dry Roasted Almonds
Earthbound Farm Organic Carrots
Brothers-All-Natural Fruit Crisps (Max loves these and munches on them in the car, at soccer games...)

I usually combine the food trip with a stop at their gas station. Gas is always cheaper at Costco and in this uncertain market..every bit helps!

A Meal Rut...No More!

Ever been there? Sometimes I get the feeling that we are eating the same series of dinners over and over. I do like to hear about and try new recipes, but they can’t be anything that involves standing over a stove, stirring and timing. It just does not work with adventurous one year old, Max, and when I just want to be with my kids after school. Here are some things that we have tried lately and am loving:

Mexican Chicken:Take thawed chicken breast and cover them with salsa (We LOVE the Jack's salsa from Costco). Put on a layer of frozen corn and top with mexican cheese. Bake at 350 for an hour. Fast, super easy and delicious! Thanks, Liz!

Pork Chops with Apples and Stuffing: Only 3 ingredients and so yummy! My husband loved this! Click here for recip. Thanks, Michelle!

Breakfast for Supper: We love this! There is nothing like having waffles with our favorite Reddi Wip, strawberries, powdered sugar or peanut butter at night.

Crockpot: This is my favorite utensil in the Fall and Winter. I get recipes out of Fix and Forget it Lightly and try my best to make a pencil notation next to the ones we like because I can never remember from time to time when I open that cookbook.

Free Frosty's at Wendy's

I love finding out something new and I am so excited about this!!! Probably because it has to do with one of my favorite foods: Ice Cream! Right now Wendy's has these Halloween Coupon books for Free Jr. Frosty's! The coupon books are $1 and you get 5 free frosty coupons. I think the plan is for people to buy them and pass out at Halloween, but I think I will just use them for fun little outings, rewards and surprises for the kids (soccer goals, a job well done at school, helping out at home, because Mommy wants one...)!

Last night I just buzzed through the Wendy's drive thru and got 2 coupon books. It was so easy and can't wait to use them with the kids. Thanks to my friend, Wendy, for this idea. I always find out something new and different when I chat with her. :-)

Walgreens $5 off $20 purchase

Offer good Friday and Saturday (10/3 & 10/4). Click here for coupon.

I got my first Easy Saver gift card in the mail this week from September. It will be like shopping for free at Walgreens for quite awhile (make sure to grab one of those Easy Saver catalogs when you walk in the door). Or check out Walgreens shopping 101 from Deal Seaking Mom for a good overview on how to make money shopping at Walgreens. Its is a good thing I have one so close to me because there are definitely deals to be had at Walgreens!

Worthy Des Moines Family Websites

Des Moines Families is a site that is really growing and beginning to offer a lot. What I like is that its independently done by local gal, Kelly Moore. I can't imagine the amount of time she spends working on the site, but she has done a really nice job. The few interactions I have had with her have been very personable. She appears to be a mom like me and sees the value of exposing kids to different experiences and situations. Everyone loves a good deal too and she has posted specials on Walking with the Dinosaurs and the Gymnastics Superstars Event.

The Des Moines Register has updated their website and titled it "moms like me". Its been launched for a little over a week now. I utilized their old one quite a bit, but already enjoy the feel, navigation and ease of this one. There is quite a variety of information available ranging from people promoting home based businesses, day care openings and child related questions and responses.

It doesn't seem to have quite the following and response as the old site yet. Maybe people don't know about it? Not enough time to poke around it? I signed up for their "deals and steals" notifications, but have found out more stuff on my own that I post on SaraSays. I am sure the site will pick up! It is worth it to take a look.

Thomas & Friends Play Date

I am guessing it will probably be jone more year before Thomas is more meaningful in our family (right now Max just hurtles the trains across the room), but I wanted to share because it sounds like fun!

Thomas & Friends is having a Toys “R” Us event on Saturday, October 11th between 11am and 1pm for a play date with stories, coloring, trading cards, and the popular train table!
